  • Turtle Tips: Stop Worrying About References. Authentic Arrogance Requires Confidence

No one will give you too much grief for not wanting to provide your direct manager as a reference. Trust me... being a "turtle" hurts or helps me (you'd be surprised how much it helps sometimes) with networking. Some random human who liked or didn't like me rarely moves the needle, especially if you have a mega tough shell. I've had people who despised me give incredible references or recommendations because they genuinely believed that me getting the job or client would benefit everyone. Additionally, if I'm not working for them or competing with them, I might become a customer down the road! There are multiple scenarios where I had been in screaming matches to get a founder to listen to avoid them blowing millions of dollars on the client they tasked me with. If I screamed and it worked? Do you think he's going to say 'Misha yelled at me and made me fear for the lives of my children'? No--unless I am applying for a role in the mob (--uh I mean politics), then it's usually not needed. I've also had people who liked me quite a bit who I would never ask for a reference. The well was poisoned a long time ago and everyone who worked around us knew that. If you think someone is a complete and utter cancer in your side, they may give you a 'risky' reference, even if they claim it will be positive. You never know what someone who feels burned will do in a professional situation, so in most cases, if you can't win the power struggle internally, accept that you lost and cut ties after it is over. I had a boss who knew that I was outright ANGRY and told her I felt betrayed. More or less I told my boss that I was gone regardless--either get rid of me or I'm transferring internally or I'll make turtles (ok that last part I didn't mention). Even if I did an incredible job for that person, would the reference be any different? What about from HER boss? Nope... especially for what I am planning to do and how little mutual respect we had for each other. When in doubt, confirm what your reference will say but don't be afraid to push back and offer a more appropriate reference. I usually confirm what I'll say if it is a positive reference, but do I really want to risk some loudmouth manager discussing my 'flaws' while failing to acknowledge my ability to work independently? If that manager didn't actually manage me (e.g., she had the title but not the role), then I need to either give her a script, not use her, or find another route. I understand ego (myself included), so if am trying to get a job or client? I don't want my recommender talking about themselves--I want them talking about me. Can we also discard the phrase 'I hope we cross paths again'? I highly recommend that anyone I warned keeps their distance. I'm not as friendly as before, and I won't hesitate to do whatever is necessary to protect myself. TL;DR FAFO

  • Honoring D-Day June 6, 1944: British brains 🇬🇧, American steel 🇺🇸, Russian blood 🇷🇺, and Turtle 🐢 shells

June 6th, 1944 D-Day 🇬🇧 brains, 🇺🇸 steel, 🇷🇺 blood, 🐢 shells. Though the Turtles are a peaceful civilization that typically avoids intervening in human affairs, turtles and the British have always shared a special bond. Turtle shells have often rescued near-drowning British soldiers who fell overboard during Royal Navy battles. Winston Churchill himself implored the turtles to reconsider their stance on isolationism. The Queen was initially hesitant to get involved, but after hearing about the atrocities in Germany and Poland, she called for a meeting with American generals. On February 2, 1944, General Dwight D. Eisenhower met with the Queen of Turtle Island, Queen Turtlian IV, to discuss the invasion plans for Operation Overlord. You didn't see the turtles in the dramatic opening scene of "Saving Private Ryan" because the turtles insisted that the American CIA erase all human memories of their involvement. That secrecy ends today. The files have been declassified by the American Congress. Here's a photo of the first turtles storming the beaches of Normandy. Despite the snipers and artillery bombardment, the turtles' shells allowed them to reach the shore. They then shielded the Allied human forces from incoming fire. Their progress up the beach was slow, being turtles, but their actions saved countless lives. This protection enabled the humans to neutralize the sniper nests and artillery, paving the way for the rest of the seaborne forces to advance. Emmanuel Macron himself delivered a speech in Turtle Island this morning, designating today as a day celebrating peace and prosperity between the Turtlians and the French

  • Pride 2024: Why is everyone gay?

20% of Gen Z identifies as LGBT. That seems... off, right? Have you ever noticed how education and media seem to be increasingly dominated by the rainbow flag and most recently the "Progress" Pride Flag? It begs the question: at what age is it appropriate to discuss LGBT issues with students? Also... who can keep up with all these flags??? Parental Rights and Education Some argue that there is no appropriate age, and I understand their concerns. I agree. As a member of the LGBT community myself, I worry about the potential for propaganda and the mishandling of these conversations by educators and activists (same thing most times). It's not just pink-haired queer people who should be having these conversations. I get more pressure frankly from the LGBT community than I do any centrist or conservative (rarely an issue--more a disagreement). And when we do try to engage in a normal conversation, it seems like everyone is too busy picking sides and shouting at each other. Can't we find a way to come together and have a productive dialogue? Suggested Ground Rules to Respect Faiths and Freedoms of Americans No kids. Keep it out of schools. Keep it out of cartoons. No more rainbow capitalism . Those are fair albeit unlikely to happen. It Pays to Be Gay... Sometimes it helps you land a job, particularly with on campus recruiting at elite colleges and MBA programs. The financial, technology, and consulting industries seem to offer more opportunities for individuals who identify as LGBT. However, this creates a problem where some people may falsely identify themselves as such in order to increase their chances of landing a job. If job prospects are easier for those who identify as bisexual, for instance, it's possible that many individuals who don't truly identify as such will present themselves as such. This is a concerning trend as it undermines the principles of meritocracy and suggests that the most qualified candidates may not always be selected for the job. It would be better to not factor sexuality into job applications and recruiting. Are they "really" bi? My hypothesis is that there has been a notable surge in bisexuality (and transsexual, but bisexuality is a larger component group of LGBT so it represents more of the absolute growth vs. percentage growth) in contemporary times, but what is driving it? We have some ideas. 📷 Despite this observation, the underlying causes for this increase remain uncertain. It's possible that more individuals are genuinely embracing their sexuality, while others may be driven by social validation or incentives like the corporate recruiting to elite industries. Or perhaps it is an innate desire to explore their sexual identity without necessarily acting on it? Which would match the graph from earlier… Bisexual women who never sleep with women? 🤔 Pride Month is Exhausting from the Left and Right... And it's only June 4th! 💀

  • AI Art in Midjourney: Animated Design Featuring Multi-Blended Images of a Woman & Two Broken Hearts

Midnight Rain Heartbreaks in NYC 🎨 🐢 Midjourney AI Animated Design Featuring Multi-Blended Heartbreak 💔 in NYC 🐢 Midnight Rain Heartbreaks in NYC 🎨 Lonely soul dealing with a breakup? I got you covered with Taylor Swift's Midnight Rain Multi-Blended ❤️‍🩹 I designed this piece using Midjourney, blending multiple images to represent heartbreak and loss, inspired by "Midnight Rain" by Taylor Swift. The woman is now caught between two hearts that are separating against the backdrop of a dark New York City night. The long-ignored, inevitable end has finally ignited, and she must pursue her own dreams to find any sense of purpose in a world that seemingly lacks ambition and drive. Self-driven dreams are viewed as burdens that disrupt the consistency and comfort of a relationship, especially when one party cannot understand the other's obsessive drive. She'll always be chasing bigger challenges, which means she would be miserable if the couple stayed together. He had hoped that she would eventually settle down and find him sufficient to fill the void of her reckless creative ambition. However, we are too young to settle into old ways, and there's no life worth living for an uncaged mind forced into a future suburban stereotype simply because that's what her parents did and wanted. “He wanted it comfortable, I wanted that pain He wanted a bride, I was making my own name Chasing that fame, he stayed the same All of me changed like midnight rain.”

  • Social network for professionals, Bizfluence launches next funding round

Excellent article about Bizfluence from TyNMagazine with a screenshot of the founding story above. I'm proud to back Bizfluence and really impressed with what the founders Jacob and Joel are doing! LinkedIn canceled Joel Wolh for a Bill Gates joke during Covid. Deplatforming / suspensions on LinkedIn are arbitrary and often flagged wrong by their AI. During Covid, in an effort to suppress possible misinformation, LinkedIn and many other social media platforms overreached significantly, changed the rules rapidly, and failed to communicate proactively with users. LinkedIn needs to do better, and we need additional options that enable people across the world to network and conduct business. That’s why Bizfluence was born and why users have been signing up from across the world to network and conduct business. The app looks to scale and compete with LinkedIn for key business user segments. While not political, Bizfluence also aims to avoid deplatforming by focusing just on business--leave the politics to Twitter We need leaders like Joel. I've met many impressive entrepreneurs throughout my life. Joel's force of will matches that of 3 founders / mentors I worked for and grew amazing companies. You can contribute to Bizfluence community's growth on StartEngineLA here. My profile on Bizfluence can also be found here! If you create a profile, it would be much appreciated as they look to raise the capital necessary to keep building!

  • Circle of Life

I was excited to see this Monarch Butterfly on the ground! I even knelt down to take a look at the beautiful creature. Then I realized it was dead. There is something both beautiful and morbid about this image.

  • What is the future of Locast? An injunction granted against the nonprofit broadcast streamer.

I’m torn on the recently issued injunction against Locast. On one hand, as a user, I was deeply impressed by the Locast team. What is Locast? Locast is a nonprofit that streams broadcast content (ABC, NBC, Fox, CBS, etc.) and delivers it to end users. In a world that is increasingly streaming focused, this seems like a natural “extension” to me of OTA (over-the-air) guidelines. Federal regulations require that broadcast stations offer OTA for free. However, the Big 4 claimed in their lawsuit that Locast’s distribution of streams was theft. While things were tight financially for many Americans in 2020, Locast actually made their service available to users at no additional cost. It has always been free, but they did bug you repeatedly (by interrupting your stream) for donations. Locast asks for $5 donations annoyingly often during the streams, but they waived that in 2020 so people could still access their broadcast stations. I do think it is very important for people, regardless of their income, to have access to broadcast stations. That being said, the judge’s ruling makes sense. For instance, Charter Communications (or any cable distributor) cannot redistribute the Big 4 broadcaster’s content for free to end users even if we wanted to do it. The judge also reviewed Locast’s 2020 financials and did find they made more money than was probably required to run their services. I would argue in Locast’s defense that they were trying to expand into additional geographic markets (broadcast station affiliates often host local programming — it’s not just the prime time shows), but the judge disagreed.

  • Is Clickbait on Netflix worth a watch?

Yes. Clickbait on Netflix is an interesting show. It has a huge gap between critic reception and audience score which usually is a good sign the show is worth a watch. I thought it was an interesting look at deep web, social media, viral video spread, and privacy rights. Link to Clickbait on Netflix.

  • The 4 Countries in the World Without Netflix

Adam Sandler actually changed the plot of his upcoming Netflix movie. He plays an NBA team scout and originally the plot had him going to China to find the player. It was switched to Spain because Netflix does not operate in China. This made me curious about where Netflix does not have a presence. The list is pretty small: China Crimea North Korea Syria https://comicbook.com/movies/news/adam-sandler-changed-plot-of-new-movie-due-to-netflix-demand/

  • So OnlyFans essentially did a viral marketing gimmick? Writing this post shows it worked.

I wonder if OnlyFans had anticipated the backlash and then already had this response planned. Not faulting them for trying to get users, but this strategy literally got them in the news on business social websites, non-business social, and even the mainstream news. And…this reversal gets them in the news cycle again in a way that makes them appear like the “good guys”. Maybe it’s the cynical side in me, but I call BS. OnlyFans is in the process of trying to do a rather large raise in the private markets before eventually going public. Something smells fishy to me…

  • Charter and Roku resolve 9 month standoff and reach new Spectrum TV carriage deal!

As a Charter Analytics Manager focused on programming content strategy, I am thrilled to spread the news that Roku devices will once again start carrying Spectrum TV's live and on-demand applications. Charter is the second largest US Cable operator and Roku is the market leader in Smart TVs. Many of Charter's new offerings include reduced prices and flexibility, such as Spectrum Choice, Essentials and Stream. While the set-top-box customers were probably not as impacted by Roku's dispute with Charter, the 9 month period meant that any IPTV (internet streaming) customers could not download the Spectrum TV app on Roku. I'm glad to see this resolved and happy that Roku and Charter can continue their partnership! “Charter Communications and Roku have reached a mutually beneficial agreement to renew distribution of the Spectrum TV App (STVA) on the Roku platform. As a result of the renewal, the Spectrum TV App is now available for download from the Roku channel store. We are pleased to renew our partnership and offer this great streaming experience to our shared customers." - Roku and Charter shared statement Read more: https://deadline.com/2021/08/roku-charter-spectrum-resolve-dispute-streaming-app-1234816512/ https://www.fiercevideo.com/video/charter-roku-reach-new-carriage-deal-for-spectrum-tv-app https://www.roku.com/blog/spectrum-tv-app-roku
